Personally, the Thin White Duke is one of my favorite Bowie characters, in the whole ‘I’m much more cool than you’ sort of way. Bowie now considers the duke a “nasty” character from a depressing part of his life when addiction was ruling him. However, the whole dynamic of the impeccably dressed hollow man who sang songs of romance with an agonized intensity while feeling nothing offers an interesting duality of personality that I find intriguing. Very much like the Count of Monte Cristo-a man who gives the outside appearance of nobility while harboring a deep pain that focuses the soul toward some end-be it revenge, artistic superiority or simply making it to another day without letting on how fragile and hurt they truly are. I think this is why so many are enthralled by characters like the duke. We all would like to be that person, the one who skirts though life untouchable, the one to whom nothing sticks and everything flows off. But the truth is, there is no such person and we have no idea how we got to where we are.
